Yahoo's Aging News
Excellent worldwide collection of up-to-date news stories on aging from around the world.

AARP Bulletin is probably required reading to easily stay current on federal and state issues, as well as other topics of interest to seniors.

FirstGov for Seniors is a nice collection of news from federal agencies serving seniors. This was created by the National Partnership for Reinventing Government and is maintained by the Social Security Administration.

Senior Journal is a private sector website. It has a lot of good content and extensive links to the web. The information is organized by content areas. This site stands out from other private sites.

ELDER ABUSE
 

If you are an elder experiencing abuse, or if you know or suspect a case of elder abuse, contact the Case Coordination Unit. It is designed to be a comprehensive diagnostic and case management resource for the elderly in PSA 8. Contact them at the Southwestern Illinois VNA, phone CCU at 618-236-5863 M-F 7am-4pm or e-mail them for more information and assistance. Elsewhere in Illinois call the Illinois Elder Abuse Hotline at 1-866-800-1409 for 24/7 assistance. If you are outside Illinois, the national Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 will connect you with resources nation-wide.

The links below cover the major sites for elder abuse. The first, the National Center on Elder Abuse is an excellent first destination to get grounded on the issues and get a deep understanding of the issues surrounding elder abuse.

Elder Abuse Basics from the National Center on Elder Abuse. The signs of Elder Abuse and Frequently Asked Questions. The Center website is an excellent resource and very well organized. Funded by AoA. Highly recommended.

National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse works to prevent elder abuse through education, coalition building, advocacy and a variety of related efforts.

OVC HELP for Victim Service Providers Web forum
This is a place where victim service providers and allied professionals can connect to peers, share ideas about best practices, and help change lives.

Identity Theft Resource Center
A nonprofit, nationally respected program dedicated exclusively to identity theft. It provides consumer and victim support and advises governmental agencies, legislators and companies about this evolving and growing crime.

SELF-HELP

Effective self-help is based on practical information to assist you with problem-solving. You need insight into a problem to begin to solve it. This section of our website is designed to assist seniors and their caregivers with understanding the often difficult problems they face.

The information that follows is only the first step. If you find that your self-assessment indicates that you have a problem, please take the important next step of seeking professional help. Call us or call one of our Grantees, we have many resources that can help.

Benefits Checkup
is a website that does a comprehensive screening of any senior's eligibility for services. Seniors are asked to fill out a simple questionnaire that is submitted on-line. Using this information, BenefitsCheckup returns a list of programs for which she is qualified. Also included on the website is BenefitsCheckupRX which will do a similar eligibility screening for prescription drug programs. This is funded by the National Council on Aging.

NURSING HOMES

Long-term care must be a life-enhancing experience if we are to age with dignity. These links are to resources that will enable consumers to advocate for nursing home reform, evaluate the quality of providers, and importantly, join in efforts designed to improve care and create community.

National Citizen's Coalition for Nursing Home Reform is one of the premier sites for long-term care advocacy and information. This comprehensive site provides useful up-to-date policy information, directories to services, ombudsmen, and relevant agencies and programs. See also the directory to web resources.

Nursing Home Compare is a service of the federal Medicare program website. If you are evaluating nursing homes, this tool enables you to view their quality rating. This is an essential tool for consumers and can be a real eye opener.

The Pioneer Network is an inspired group dedicated to reinventing long term care through cultural transformation. "The Pioneer Network supports models where elders live in open, diverse, caring communities." This grassroots movement works to restore dignity to aging through the promotion of humanistic goals in long term care, and creating a sense of community.
